Chicago 2007
Health
Survey Results
At
the CCA’s national specialty in Chicago 2007, the health committee
presented a survey for chihuahua breeders and owners to fill out. There
were five columns on the survey- one each for patellas, cardiac, CERF,
BAER, and “other”. Breeders were asked to number each test they would be
interested in order of priority from #1 to #4.
Our
goals for the survey were to find out which tests breeders would be most
likely to participate in so that we can offer those tests at future
national specialties. We also wanted to increase awareness of the health
testing that is available for the breed.
Our
ultimate goal of course, is to increase health testing, therefore
benefiting the overall health and longetivity of our breed.
91
chihuahua breeders and owners participated in the survey.
67%
felt that patella testing should be our #1 priority. 22% were most
interested in cardiac testing. 9% prioritized CERF testing and 1% felt
that BAER testing is most important. Almost 8% of breeders surveyed also
felt that thyroid testing is important in our breed and mentioned that in
the “other” column. Seizure disorder and immunodeficiency were also
mentioned.
