AKC Letter re:Gladstone to CCA

Dear CCA Member,

Thank you for your communication regarding the letter sent out by Mr. Gladstone. The AKC Board of Directors did vote eleven to one to authorize the Chihuahua Club of America to vote on the proposed breed standard disqualification of merles. In so doing, the AKC Board approved the Chihuahua Club of America voting on the standard change.

Any AKC Board member is free to express a personal opinion on a matter such as this, although it should be made perfectly clear that it is strictly that individual’s opinion, and in no way reflects the position of AKC or the AKC Board. Mr. Gladstone clearly made such a disclaimer in the PS at the bottom of the letter.

Sincerely,
James Crowley,
AKC Executive Secretary

Elio,
I appreciate the information. As you may be aware the merle has also caused quite a stir with the Chihuahua breeders and exhibitors here.

Dear Jim,

Hope all is well with you. Our CEO, Mr. Mauro, has asked that I write to you to inform the AKC of a recent decision taken by the Board of the Canadian Kennel Club, to amend the Chihuahua breed standard  with respect to the “merle” colour.  Effective January 01, 2008, the “merle colour”  in Chihuahua’s will be a disqualification for conformation showing purposes only, this breed standard amendment does not affect the registration of these dogs.
If you have any questions  please contact me.

Sincerely,

The Canadian Kennel Club

Merles in UK

Special Notice from AKC July 2007:

Patricia Larrissey, Secretary
Chihuahua Club of America.

Dear Ms. Larrissey,

I have received an official notice from The Kennel Club in England that their General Committee has just voted to ban the registration of merle Chihuahuas. This action was based upon their concern for genetic health problems associated with the merle gene in the breed. I did note that the Parent Club web site does reference a study being done at LSU regarding the relationship between the merle color and deafness. This will impact both the import from and export to the UK of merles, as well as the eligibility of merles to compete in shows in the UK. For example, if a merle takes a qualifying award at the AKC National Championship or the National Specialty, it would not be eligible to compete in Crufts. You may wish to notify your membership accordingly.

 Sincerely,
James Crowley
AKC Executive Secretary

Breeds & Personalities Survey

 Parent Club Notice: July 2007

Dear Parent Club Secretary:

We are writing to ask you and your fellow club members to participate in an online survey about "Breeds and Personality." The goal of this light-hearted survey is to determine what personality types are attracted to and compatible with certain breeds. We believe the results will be illuminating and entertaining, and will interest a wide range of news media, much like our annual registration statistics do.

We need hundreds of responses from owners of each of the 157 registered breeds in order to be able to include each breed in the resulting findings. Therefore we'd appreciate you passing this along to as many dog owners as you can and, in particular your breed fanciers.

The survey is completely voluntary and your responses will be kept strictly confidential. It will take approximately 10 minutes.  We thank you for your participation and look forward to sharing the aggregated results with you in the future.

Take the survey! http://www.akc.org/news/index.cfm?article_id=3270
